Kiss the Sky Playlist: Chapter 10, The Buggles, “Video Killed the Radio Star”

Sunday, May 16th, 2010

In my novel Kiss the Sky, each chapter begins with a song. Over the course of the book, I compile a 91 song playlist that parallels the mood and story of the main character, Sophie “Sky” Lee, a black rock musician trying to make it in New York at the turn of the Millennium. I’ll blog a song from the playlist each day until the playlist is complete. Enjoy.

The Story Behind the Song….. Chapter 10: The Buggles, “Video Killed the Radio Star”

This was just so far ahead of its time. This is why I stayed up to watch Friday Night Videos. (No, we did not have cable, and thus no MTV.)

Bonus: from Wikipedia

“In 2009 [Buggles co-founder Trevor] Horn teamed up to produce the album Reality Killed The Video Star for British singer Robbie Williams. The album title pays homage to Horn’s first single with The Buggles back in 1980. The two performed the song together at the BBC Electric Proms on 20 October 2009.[7]“

Kiss the Sky Playlist: Chapter 9, Nine Inch Nails, “Closer”

The Story Behind the Song….. Chapter 9: Nine Inch Nails, “Closer”

This song is just so dirty and sexy. I adore it. And I quote: “I want to f**k you like an animal. I want to feel you from the inside. I want to f**k you like an animal. All my existence is flawed. You get me closer to God.” Sorry to those who are now appalled, either by Trent Reznor’s lyrics or my love of them.

This one is most certainly NSFW. A double barreled shot:

Uncensored lyrics, wickedly uncensored video by Mark Romanek:

Video of live performance — and learn Spanish the dirty, sexy way!

(And no, I did not intentionally put Nine Inch Nails in Chapter 9. Trust me on this. Not that it matters.)

Kiss the Sky Playlist: Chapter 8, The Pretenders, “Back on the Chain Gang”

In my novel Kiss the Sky, each chapter begins with a song. Over the course of the book, I compile a 91 song playlist that parallels the mood and story of the main character, Sophie “Sky” Lee, a black rock musician trying to make it in New York at the turn of the Millennium. The Story Behind the Song….. Chapter 8: The Pretenders, “Back on the Chain Gang”

There are so many fierce women who rock in so many ways, from Tamar Kali to Kate Bush (who Tamar covered, to my great delight, in a live performance) to Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders.

Chrissie’s voice just sounds wise to me, and at the age I started listening to her she sounded like an older friend who knew things about life and men that I was hopeful and fearful of learning. She is gendered in a way that reminds me of Patsy Cline — not her sound, but the way you can hear a woman being a woman in her voice.

Kiss the Sky Playlist: Chapter 7, Air, “Sexy Boy”

I was rocking this new electronica joint on the way home. The people flattened out and looked like cartoons to me, like a video game. I was just on the outside looking at the screen.

Lines from Chapter 7, on the way that Sky spaces out to music on her Discman (yes, pre-iPod) on her subway commute.

I call it “soundtracking”…the way we use music to distract, desensitize, augment or enhance. In an iPod world, people soundtrack all the time, but in the Walkman/Discman era it was a bit more rare, and certainly more cumbersome. (I have changed discs on a crowded subway and it was tricky.)

Virtual reality is a daily reality in a world saturated in media.

Kiss the Sky Playlist: Chapter 6, Craig Mack, “Flava in Ya Ear”

In my novel Kiss the Sky, each chapter begins with a song. Over the course of the book, I compile a 91 song playlist that parallels the mood and story of the main character, Sophie “Sky” Lee, a black rock musician trying to make it in New York at the turn of the Millennium. The Story Behind the Song….. Chapter 6: Craig Mack, “Flava in Ya Ear”

We’d gained millions of viewers, and you could say we’d lost our soul along the way. I’m not sure we ever had a soul to begin with, but we did have a lot of naughty, silly, music-fandom fun.

Those are a couple lines from Chapter 6 of the book, referring to the main character’s job at a music video station. I readily confess to a specific nostalgia for the late 90s/early early zeroes. We constantly experienced media-induced flashbacks that were jarring and eerily pleasing. Hearing early/mid nineties hip hop (like Craig Mack’s crowd-pleasing, awesome-video-having hit) while on the dance floor was a form of instant recall of where you were five years before.

The video is Hype Williams at his height. I wonder how much it cost then and in inflation-adjusted dollars today? How does that compare to the cost of videos that hit similar marks on the charts these days? Just wondering.
