Documentary

Farai Chideya is currently filming the documentary Halfrican. Halfrican opens up a space for people to understand the difficult relationship between Africans and African-Americans. The story unfolds among Farai Chideya’s extended family, which spans two continents. Farai illustrates the difficulty with reconciling an African-American identity with the bicultural realty of being “Halfrican”—half African (Zimbabwean, specifically) and half American. President Barack Obama is the most famous Halfrican in the world…the child of a Kenyan father and an American mother from Kansas. In his book, Dreams From My Father, he
tries to understand the life of an absent parent who is African, while he simultaneously struggles to understand his personal place on the cultural continuum of African and African-American identity—a journey parallel to many Halfricans living in the US. The Halfrican story has repeated itself across America and has become a part of the fabric of the American immigrant story. This documentary will provide insight to the lives of Halfricans and their parallel to the cultural identity of African-Americans as they struggle to strike a balance with their own African-American identity and their African blood. Farai has shot footage in both Zimbabwe and the United States, and continues filming and editing. In 2007, Farai participated in the Sundance Producer’s Workshop as part of the Halfrican project.
